Jab Tak Hai Jaan Music Review

The beginning of the album does throw you in an unfamiliar zone though with 'Challa'. Just when one expected 'santoor' to be doing the trick (something which is expected in a Yashji film, especially since the time when he collaborated with Shiv-Hari three decades back), it is actually a guitar on the forefront. Rabbi Shergill is the chosen one and though one would have still adjusted to his voice if it was for a montage sequence, it is surprising to actually see Shahrukh Khan lip-synching on him. Yes, the music is indeed very catchy (which is a relief) but the heavy duty lyrics as well as peculiar singing style of Rabbi does take time to settle in.

Music Director: A R Rahman

The way 'Saans' begins, listener is taken into the Yuvvraaj zone, what with the pace being extremely slow and Shreya Ghoshal required to take her own time stressing on 'saans' before coming to the point. In fact in a strange way one is also reminded of (hold your breath!) Nadeem Shravan's 'Itna Bhi Na Chaho Mujhe' from Saif Ali Khan-Pooja Bhatt's long-in-the-making-and-forgotten film Sanam Teri Kasam. In fact 'Saans', with Mohit Chauhan as Shreya's partner turns out to be its much slower version and though it does come on its own in the 'antara' portions, it doesn't quite throw in the kind of results one would have expected from a Yash Chopra musical. Later there is a two minutes 'reprise version' of the song featuring as well but since the original itself doesn't create much impact, one doesn't quite long for revisiting it.

By the time 'Ishq Shava' arrives, one ends up wondering if A.R. Rahman was asked to basically compose his style of music with Yashji actually taking a backseat. Reason being that this number doesn't have any trace whatsoever of the kind of legacy that Yashji carries. Even on repeated listening one fails to find the legendary director anywhere in the compositions so far and that's a pity because when it comes to a film from the house of THE Yash Chopra, expectations are that of some vintage stuff in the offering. However this Raghav Mathur and Shilpa Rao song is hardly that and could have been a part of just any film.

Just when one thought that Jab Tak Hai Jaan wasn't quite an album that one expected it to be arrives 'Heer' which is a beautiful composition by Rahman. Yet another Punjabi number, it has Harshdeep Kaur doing quite well in this happy-sad rendition which has a folk flavour to it. A smooth flowing number, it only becomes further soulful in the 'antara' portions and pretty much transports you into the world that one looks forward to stepping in for this film. This is one song which has in it to rule in the charts once the film turns successful at the box office.

Neeti Mohan is the chosen for the dance number 'Jiya Re' which sounds like the one that would fit in Anushka Sharma's effervescent personality. Though yet again one does feel that it doesn't quite carry a 'special' tag that one had been looking for in each and every song coming out of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, it still manages to hold on its own. Having said that, one has to hear the song multiple times to get a hang of it and still it can't be said with utmost certainty that it would turn out to be a chartbuster in the offering.

Title song 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' arrives quite late in the day and yet again the beginning portions do remind one of the kind of sound that Yuvvraaj carried. The song begins in the vocals of Javed Ali and while the start is slow, there is a rhythmic flow that it acquires as it proceeds. Though Shakhtisree Gopalan's entry into the song at the two minute mark is rather abrupt, one just hopes that in the film's context it does aid in giving the film's narrative some smooth flow. However it has to be added that for a title song of one of the biggest films to have come out of Bollywood, this one doesn't quite cover the distance.

A three and a half minutes 'instrumental' piece 'Ishq Dance' could well have been the 'The Dance Of Envy' [Dil Toh Pagal Hai] moment of the album. However (and ironically), it comes across as a mix of Helen's dance number from The Great Gambler (remember the 'secret code dance film' sequence at Prem Chopra's den?) and 'Hothon Pe Aisi Baat' (Jewel Thief). One just hopes that the dance moves on screen are enticing enough to elevate this instrumental's perspective.

The conclusion is quite good though with Shahrukh Khan rendering the poem 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. In fact this is the only song where one experiences vintage Yashji in action where right from Gulzar's lyrics to Shahrukh's voice modulation to Rahman's arrangements justify the entire team coming together to create something magical. Expect this one to be huge, especially after the film's release.

Verdict: Jab Tak Jai Jaan turns out to be a mixed bag

Aiyyaa Movie Review

Read the Exclusive Aiyyaa Movie Review

Girl dances to songs of Madhuri, Sridevi and Juhi wearing outsize glasses. A huge garbage bin in front of a house. A father fiddles with 30 old phones and smokes 3 cigarettes at a time. A blind grandmother with long open hair careens about on a motorized wheelchair screeching songs and slogans. A dog-mad brother makes out with a girl in a Playboy bunny costume in a bathtub. A colleague dresses like Lady gaga and dances in the college on a table. Does all this make sense to you? No? Aga bai! did not make sense to me too!
Aiyyaa Movie Review

Duration: 2 hrs 29 mins

Aiyya is a fragmented, disjointed, confused and frenzied mirror that Rani holds up to herself. There are so many things in it and so much that it tries to be that it ends up showing us only pieces of what could have been a sweet love story or a mad comic caper or an auto erotic lunatic’s story. The movie careens from shot to shot, suddenly showing us a song, then cutting to a dialogue to abruptly becoming funny. It is too wakda for its own good.

Rani plays a dreamy girl looking for real love. Instead of love, lust strikes when she smells (yes, you read right) a Tamilian guy in the Art college where she works. She starts following him in a daze every time she smells him and falls in love with him. In the meantime, her crackpot family fixes her marriage with a decent Maharashtrian bloke. What does she do next? Aiyya takes you through a maze of dance styles, bizarre scenes and wacko characters before it reaches a surprisingly sweet end.

Rani goes all out to please the audience. She does a ‘lavani’, a belly dance, a Silk Smitha type number and a bit of Bharat Natyam and puts her heart into each of these songs. However, the story and Director let her down. Her acting swings from exaggerated comedy to serious dialogues and leaves you confused about the character. Why a fine actress like her should want to try and impress the audience with a road show of her talents is beyond imagination.

Prithviraj making his debut in Hindi movies cuts a fine figure. He is pure eye candy in this film. Ishha!

The person who was the best fun to watch because of the bizarreness of her character is Anita Date as the Lady Gaga colleague. She is fun and uninhibited and seems to be the only one who fits the movie. Though of course we cannot ask questions like “Who lets a lunatic like that work in a college? and why did she need horrendous buck teeth given that her character was anyway so OTT?” It is only one of the zillion questions that strike you but you dare not ask for answers for fear of what you will face when you look into the Director’s mind.

I like the fact that the movie shows its ok for women to lust and be open about it. And there are a few good scenes and a few laughs. But sadly it’s not enough to compensate for the uncontrolled madness exhibited over a film of 2.5 hours. You have to be truly in a ‘wakda’ state of mind to enjoy the high camp style of this movie. If you look at it as a surreal sort of movie it is enjoyable but otherwise it will leave you dizzier than the “phugadi” that the Maharashtrian women are seen doing in the movie. Mala jau de.

Verdict: A simple story turned on its head by some crazy direction. One time watch for the groovy Prtihvi and Anita Date

Student Of The Year Story

Movie Synopsis of Student Of The Year (2012) starring Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt. Directed by Karan Johar.

Student Of The Year Story

The road from youth to adulthood is paved with myriad emotions and Student Of The Year celebrates this colorful coming of age. It is the story of Abhimanyu Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) and Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan) who traverse the path of competition, envy, triumph, failure, manipulation and heartbreak in their mini-universe of St. Teresa’s High School, Dehradun. Abhimanyu Singh a.k.a Abhi comes from a middle-class family and wants to achieve great heights of success and prosperity, the first step to which will be the Student of the Year trophy while Rohan Nanda a.k.a Ro, is the son of a business tycoon who grapples with a complex relationship with his father and knows that winning the Student Of the Year trophy will bag him the approval that he subconsciously craves for. When the two protagonists with distinct backgrounds and clear goals clash with each other in the locker room, football field and the canteen, there is no question in anyone’s mind that the preset equations of the St.T’s campus were about to change.

When Abhi and Rohan’s rivalry takes an unexpected turn to friendship, neither pre-empts the complications that would brew. Things are further knotted up when Shanaya Singhania (Alia Bhatt), the most popular girl on the campus enters the equation. While Shanaya and Rohan are childhood sweethearts, Abhi’s attraction for his best friend’s girlfriend and Shanaya’s quiet reciprocation causes a rift in their friendship that would have a long lasting impact. Looming large over the various friendships in the campus is the Student Of The year trophy and Dean Yogendra Vasisht’s (Rishi Kapoor) emphasis on success and victory. Towards the end of the term, the foes-turned-friends-turned foes, Abhi and Rohan, are ready for a face-off and battle lines are drawn through the length and breadth of the campus, with only one goal in everyone’s eyes --– Student Of The Year Trophy. As new ambitions are born and old loyalties fall by the wayside, each segment of the Student Of The Year competition manages to tear apart both, the participants and the spectators, to redefine the choices of the three protagonists.

What will Abhimanyu choose? Victory or Friendship?
What will Rohan choose? Victory or Dreams?
What will Shanaya choose? Victory or Emotions?

Jism 2 Movie Review

Jism 2 Movie Review

Star-Cast: Sunny Leone, Arunoday Singh, Randeep Hooda
.
Director: Pooja Bhatt
.
Producer: Dino Morea, Mukesh Bhatt
.
Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes

Jism 2 like The Tree of Life, starts with a quote from the Book of Job (Ahem). Before entering the theater, I was wondering if this film would be another remake of a Hollywood film like Jism wished it was a remake of Billy Wilders masterpiece: Double Indemnity (1944). Hell, they wish it had been a remake of Body Heat (1981) (which was also a remake of Double of Indemnity) but it was a mere trifle.

I was wondering which other 40s film by a master filmmaker will they taint this time. To my horror, this film was indeed a pseudo-remake. I wouldn't like to call it loosely based because that would be giving the filmmakers too much credit for shamelessly lifting another masterpiece. This time they chose the Alfred Hitchcock masterpiece: Notorious (1946).

The film begins with an awkward scene between Izna (Sunny Leone) and Ayaan (Arunoday Singh) as they lustfully slip into bed. Next morning, he asks her to become a spy for him and retrieve top-secret data for his Intelligence Agency. The carrier of the data is her ex-lover, who she presumed dead but is alive and kicking. In fact he is a terrorist now. She is hesitant to take up the job due to her grief (?) even if it will pay her 10 crores. (Who pays 10 crores for THAT!?)

Sunny Leone makes porn stars look bad. If this is called hot, there is something seriously wrong with the men of our country. She respirates heavily in random scenes. Her body seems to be doing something else while her face is on another tangent and the dialogues convey something else entirely. No wonder she is a porn actress. Her body knows what to do while the camera is on. The only problem is that she doesn't manage to look good while doing it. A major hurdle Miss Leone faces is that her character has to pretend to still be in love with Kabir (Randeep Hooda), her ex-boyfriend. Hence, Leone not just has to act in a film but her character also has to put on an act. Assessment: double the pressure, double the failure.

At the beginning, I thought Randeep Hooda is the only one who has a command over his role. Then he suddenly starts hamming and soon, the hamming turns into something psychotic. Hes quite a good actor but has chosen the wrong projects. Along with the recent Cocktail, Jism 2 is one of the bad decisions hes made.

Izna finally meets Kabir (Randeep Hooda) after all those years she mourned sleeping with other men. She is supposed to act surprised. Awkwardly enough, not a single facial muscle makes a twitch. You could argue that she was in shock and couldn't move. But she didn't look shocked either! Kabir also shuts the door on her, which gives a new meaning to the new-age acronym WTF. He is now living in a weird blue planetarium (it could also be a wannabe aquarium). He also has newfound cello-playing skills. But if thats an excuse to put in the song, Maula, I can totally understand. That song is an absolute winner but sadly, no other song really makes a mark.

Izna is unable to decide who she is in love with for most of the duration of the film. Arunoday is unable to decide which facial muscle to spaz out. Randeep is unable to decide which intense look to make. Certain dramatic scenes are laughable. The dialogues are terrible. I couldn't believe my ears when a character said: Tum jaanti ho ek terrorist ko marna punya hota hai (You know that killing a terrorist is a good deed). It was a competition between the three actors of who can make the weirdest, most inappropriate expressions. My winner is the retarded attacks of Arunoday Singh. This guy is definitely on something. He takes the unintentionally funny drama of the film to unfathomable depths.

There is a twist in the end, which the filmmakers wish, would blow our brains away. Apart from the fact that it can be seen miles away, it makes the political stance of the film extremely juvenile. This brings me back to Notorious where the politics was impeccably layered. It is one of the most romantic, one of the best films ever made. It masterfully juggles personal trust issues with patriotism, devotion to the country with devotion to your lover. It is also a poem on the heart-crushing emotion of jealousy. Jism 2 completely misses the point, not just of Notorious, but also of its own plot. Its understandable if they didn't want to make a romantic film but what about the basic suspense of the film? It could have been a good film, if only the Bhatts didnt watch Hitchcock films (including Suspicion) without studying the grammar behind them.

I cant recommend this film. But I can highly recommend Notorious. If you haven't seen it, watch it right now. If you have, watch it again instead of watching this. Jism 2 fails as an erotic thriller but primarily fails as a film. There is no excuse for bad filmmaking. If Mahesh Bhatt had got the script right (or maybe got somebody else to write it), he should have then got the casting right, and then probably got somebody else to direct. Oh wait.

Verdict: Jism 2 fails as an erotic thriller but primarily fails as a film.
