Allah ke Banday Meaning

Allah ke Banday, or Allah ke Bande, was a famous song, sung by Kailash Kher in the movie Waisa bhi Hota hai Part 2. Now there's a movie coming up with the title Allah ke Banday.

As known to all, Allah means God, while Banda has many meanings. Banda is nowadays used for any man, while earlier Banda was used mostly for a servant or a slave. In this context, banda means a devotee to God. Hence, the phrase Allah ke Banday, which means Devotees to God.

But at the same time, if you go by the popular meaning of the word where Banda can be any man, or rather, any human, Allah ke Banday can also mean God's humans, or humans made by God, which would simply mean Humans. Basically it depends on the context as to which meaning would you like to take here.

Talaffuz Meaning

When Javed Akhtar came on Indian Idol, there was one word that was heard a number of times. So much so that when a mimicry artist comes to mimic him on stage, he definitely says 'Aapka Talaffuz sahi nahin hai.'

But the fact is that he was completely right in his own sense because if your Talaffuz is not right while singing, it gets irritating.

OK. Let me come to the meaning. Talaffuz is an Urdu word, which means the pronunciation, articulation, the way of saying a word. In Hindi, you can call it uchcharan (उच्चारण). The word holds a real importance in music as in Urdu, slightly different way of saying a word may completely change it's meaning. For example Jaleel and Zaleel are almost opposites as Jaleel means having a splendor/style while Zaleel is humiliated, with no respect.

So next time someone says your 'talaffuz' isn't right, better take him seriously. :P

Nasheman Meaning

Tinkon ke nasheman tak, is mod se jaate hain...

Any guesses as to what is Nasheman? Well, Nasheman means a nest. In Hindi, Ghosla. Mostly houses, many times houses where one feels relaxing, are called Nasheman and in the same context the word is used in poetry.

Personally, I have had a huge fascination with the word as I have seen a very big house full of trees in my hometown, and the house is named Nasheman. Ever since I know the meaning of the word, I can relate it to that beautiful house that looks all green with trees. A nest of a house, probably that would be a perfect meaning for Nasheman.

choosing drifting

a shantyboat community by the river's edge.  

After building their "shantyboat," out of mostly salvaged materials, 

Harlan and Anna set out on the river, 

drifting.

I had no theories to prove. 

I merely wanted to try living by my own hands, 

independent as far as possible from a system of division of labor 

in which the participant loses most of the pleasure 

of making and growing things for himself.  

I wanted to bring in my own fuel and smell its sweet smoke 

as it burned on the hearth I had made.  

I wanted to grow my own food, 

catch it in the river, or forage after it.  

In short, I wanted to do as much as I could for myself, 

because I had already realized from partial experience 

the inexpressible joy of so doing.

This is a windy day with a secret exhilaration about it. 

When I look at the rough water patched with cloud shadows, 

the boat pitching slightly in the wind waves -

 all this from a higher plane somewhere above these little affairs.  

Yet they are a part and lead into it. 

The pure delight of drifting.  

Each time, it was a thrill to shove out into the current, 

to feel the life and power of the river, 

whose beginning and end were so remote.  

We became a part of it, like the driftwood... 

The tension and excitement, the near ecstasy of drifting.  

We had to stop often and take it in small doses.

How arbitrary, the ways in which we identify ourselves.

This fan chart used in genealogy helps demonstrate this fact.

10 generations here, taking us back only to the mid-1600's, 

and in that 10th generation, 512 equal contributors to 

my genetic inheritance.  I derive my identity, and even think of myself

as being related to maybe 2 of those.

That's about 2 tenths of one percent of the total genetic influence.

511 other surnames that could equally well apply.

How seriously we sometimes take ourselves.

Prayers for the Earth

For once on the face of the earth let's not speak in any language

Let's stop for one second and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment without rush, without engines.

We would all be together in a sudden strangeness.

Fisherman in the cold sea would not harm whales

...And the man gathering salt would look at his hurt hands.

Those who prepare green wars, wars with gas, wars with fire,

Victory with no survivors

Would put on clean clothes and walk about with their brothers in the shade doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused with total inactivity,

Life is what it is about.

I want no truck with death.

If we were not so single minded about keeping our lives moving,

And for once could do nothing,

Perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding ourselves

And of threatening ourselves with death.

Perhaps the earth can teach us when everything seems dead and later proves to be alive.
