Chali Kahani Lyrics Translation | Tamasha

The song is like a theme song for the movie, as in, the movie's theme is that there is one love story that keeps on going, again and again, in different places, in different times, and yet it is that one same story. This song here connects a few of the stories in the same way.
tirkiT taal se lo chali kahaani
panghaT kaal se lo chali kahaani
ho.. sarpaT dauDti hai faqat zubaani
chhutput aashiqui mein Dhali kahani
see, the story begins with a rhythm of percussion,
see, the story begins from the time of panghat,
it runs uninhibited on just the spoken word.
the story, moulded in love stories now and then.
Note: panghat means just a place where people go to fetch water, on the river bank. But here it probably signifies the time of Lord Krishna where Radha and gopis used to go to panghat to fetch water.
angin saal se hai wahi purani
tere mere ishq ki ye nayi kahani
aati kahaan se hai ye jaati kahaan kya pata..
from the time immemorial, that same old one,
this new story of love yours and mine,
from where it comes and where it goes, who knows..
ye chenaab ka dariya hai
ye ishq se bharya
wo leheron pe balkhati
Mahiwal se milne jaati
wo naam ki Sohni bhi thi
Mahiwal ki honi bhi thi
it’s the river chenaab,
it’s full of love,
she used to go to meet Mahiwal,
dancing on the waves here,
even her name was Sohni (means beautiful)
and she had to be Mahiwaal’s too.
lekin bhay kans ka tha usko to phir
Vasudev ne kaanha ko lekar
jamuna se paar langaaya..
dariya se to Firaun ki behena ne phir Moosa uThaya
but she was afraid of Kans
Vasudev took Krishna,
and went across Yamuna (to save him),
and Firaun’s sister picked up Musa from the river..
Note: Now this sounds like the same story going on, but from Sohni-Mahiwaal we have moved to Devaki’s story who is afraid of Kans for her son Krishna and Krishna is saved by Vasudev, and then in the fourth line the song moves to Moosa who was saved from a river by Firaun’s sister. Interestingly, in all three stories, there are rivers there and they seem to be connected here in a way.

गुलज़ार - एक इंटरव्यू [Gulzar - An Interview]
इन्सानी दिमाग भी अजीब चीज़ होती है। इन्सान कभी पहाड़ चाहता तो कभी समन्दर, कभी धूप चाहिए तो कभी छाँव। और कभी कभी धूप से छाँव में आकर भी चाहता है कि अब बारिश ही हो जाये। मुख़्तसर सी बात ये है कि हमारी इच्छाएं कभी ख़त्म नहीं होतीं। शायद यही वजह है कि जहाँ गुलज़ार साहब को मंच पर इंटरव्यू देखते वक़्त जहां हम बल्लियों उछल रहे थे, कुछ वक़्त गुजरने के बाद दिल में कुछ शिकायतें ठहर गयी थीं। अब वो कितनी जायज़ हैं और कितनी नहीं ये आप हिसाब कीजिये, लेकिन पहले गुलज़ार साहब के उस गीतमय इंटरव्यू की कुछ झलकियां आपके लिए।
इंटरव्यू की शुरुआत में एक चीज़ जिस की ओर भावना जी ने ध्यान दिलाया वो ये कि गुलज़ार साहब ने पिछले दशक में तकरीबन बत्तीस फिल्मों के लिए गीत लिखे जो उनके पिछले दशक के काम से भी कहीं ज़्यादा है। इस दशक में भी वो करीब सोलह फिल्मों के लिए गीत लिख चुके हैं।
खैर, आज के कार्यक्रम का ढांचा कुछ इस तरह से था कि कुछ गीत बजाये गए और गुलज़ार साहब ने ये बताया कि उस गीत का जन्म किस तरह से हुआ। कई जगहों पर गीत के बनने की कहानियाँ मिलीं तो कहीं कहीं गीतों से जुड़े लोग और यादें।
पहला गीत था गुलज़ार साहब का पहला गीत, मोरा गोरा अंग लई ले। इस गीत से जुड़ी कई सारी कहानियां थीं। पहली कहानी - गुलज़ार साहब को ये गीत कैसे मिला।
वो कवि थे। शायर, जो शायरी लिखना चाहते थे और साहित्य से ही जुड़े रहना चाहते थे। उनका इरादा ही नहीं था फिल्मों में जाने का, या यूं कहिये कि पक्का इरादा था फिल्मों में ना जाने का। लेकिन जब सचिन देव बर्मन जी ने शैलेन्द्र के साथ कुछ लड़ाई होने पर उनके साथ काम करने से मना कर दिया, तो देबू सेन ने गुलज़ार से सचिन दा के पास जाने को कहा। जब गुलज़ार ने मना किया तो शैलेन्द्र ने, जो उनसे बड़े थे, उन्हें डांट दिया। गुलज़ार के शब्दों में कुछ यूं कि, 'तुम क्या समझते हो, एक पढ़े लिखे तुम ही हो? बाकी इंडस्ट्री में कोई पढ़ा लिखा नहीं है क्या?'
दूसरी कहानी शायद और भी मज़ेदार थी। कहानी है बिमल रॉय और सचिन देव बर्मन की जहां बिमल, फिल्म के निर्देशक ये कहते हैं कि गाँव की कहानी में, वैद्य की बेटी घर से बाहर जा कर नहीं गा सकती, लेकिन सचिन दा कहते हैं कि घर में गाना घुट जाएगा। यहाँ तक कि हमने तो बाहर का म्यूज़िक भी बना लिया है, अब आप लड़की को बाहर भेजो। इस स्थिति में, संवाद लेखक महेंद्र पॉल बिमल दा से पूछते हैं कि दादा, बाप के सामने रात को घर में गाएगी तो क्या ठीक लगेगा?
अन्ततः क्या हुआ, आप गीत का विडियो ढूंढ कर देख सकते हैं।
एक कहानी जो आगे भावना जी ने बताई वो ये कि मोरा गोरा रंग लई ले, मोहे श्याम रंग दई दे का आइडिया बार बार छुपते चाँद से आया था।
इंटरव्यू के दौरान भी गुलज़ार कितने सजग रहते हैं, ये इस से पता चलता है कि उन्होंने पहली कहानी के बाद ही राकेश ओमप्रकाश मेहरा और उनकी पत्नी भारती को, जो सामने अन्य दर्शकों के साथ बैठ कर इंटरव्यू देख रहे थे, धूप से हटकर छाँव में जाने को कहा क्योंकि उन्हें यह देखना अच्छा नहीं लग रहा था।
अगला गीत था आनन्द का 'मैंने तेरे लिए ही।' यहाँ गुलज़ार साहब ने बताया कि राजेश खन्ना इस फिल्म को करने के लिए कितने उत्सुक थे, अमिताभ का अभिनय फिल्म में कितना वास्तविक प्रतीत होने वाला, और किस प्रकार किशोर कुमार, जो आनन्द बनने वाले थे, के बार बार फिल्म को आगे खिसकाने और फिर एक दिन सिर मुंडवा लेने पर ये फिल्म राजेश खन्ना को मिली।
तीसरे गीत, आंधी का तेरे बिना ज़िन्दगी से, से भी कुछ कहानियाँ जुड़ी थीं। गुलज़ार कहते हैं कि उनके सामने एक नेत्री के लिए इंदिरा गाँधी से बेहतर कोई प्रतिमान नहीं था, लेकिन उनकी कहानी का इससे कोई रिश्ता नहीं था।
लेकिन इस से ज़्यादा छूने वाली कहानी थी उनके अभिनेताओं की। संजीव कुमार जो बिना ग्लिसरीन के, केवल अपने हाथ को आँखों पर रख कर आंसू ला सकते थे, और सुचित्रा सेन, जिनकी आँखें हर बार 'तुम जो कह दो तो आज की रात चाँद डूबेगा नहीं' सुन लेने ही से भर आती थीं।
जब ये याद आ जाता है तो जी भर आता है, उनका कहना था।
इसके बाद आया 'घर' से 'तेरे बिना जिया जाए ना', जिस के साथ रेखा जी की कहानी जुड़ी थी।
घर के निर्माता एन एन सिप्पी, और निर्देशक मानिक चटर्जी, जो उस समय अचानक अस्पताल में थे, के कहने पर गुलज़ार उनके लिए एक सेट पर निर्देशन करने गए थे। तब तक गुलज़ार ने रेखा के साथ कभी काम नहीं किया था लेकिन राखी जी के कारण रेखा उन्हें न सिर्फ जानती थीं बल्कि उनके पैर भी छूती थीं। फिर भी, पहले दिन जब रेखा सुबह की जगह दोपहर में सेट पर पहुँचीं, तो गुलज़ार ने उनसे कारण पूछा। कुछ झिझकने के बाद उन्होंने बताया कि उन्होंने गुलज़ार की फिल्म आंधी अब तक नहीं देखी थी और उन्हें लगा कि यदि उसके बारे में कोई बात हुई तो यह अच्छा नहीं लगेगा, और इसीलिए अभी वो आंधी देखने गयीं थीं।
अगला गीत था मासूम का लकड़ी की काठी। पहली कहानी शबाना आज़मी की जिन्होंने शेखर कपूर से कहा कि बच्चों का गाना गुलज़ार साहब को लिखना चाहिए। और दूसरी शेखर कपूर की जिन्होंने महसूस किया कि वो कुछ चुटकुले जोड़ कर खुद ही गीत बना सकते हैं। गुलज़ार ने पहले तो उन्हें कहा कि इस तरह नहीं हो पायेगा, लेकिन जब शेखर नहीं मानते दिखे तो गुलज़ार ने उन्हें पंचम के साथ काम शुरू करने को कहा। अगले दिन शेखर ने आकर गुलज़ार साहब को बताया कि शबाना जी ने उन्हें डांटा कि आप गुलज़ार साहब को उनका काम करने दें, बच्चों के लिए गाना लिखने वाले आप कौन होते हैं।
इसके बाद वो गीत जिस पर कार्यक्रम का नाम रखा गया था, मेरा कुछ सामान तुम्हारे पास पड़ा है।
आगे सीधे गुलज़ार के शब्दों में।
पंचम बैठे हुए थे, म्यूज़िक रूम में, और मैंने ये सुनाया पढ़ के। कहने लगा बहुत अच्छा सीन है यार। मैंने कहा सीन नहीं है गाना है। तो हारमोनियम के ऊपर वो चोपड़ियाँ, चोपड़ी कहता था वो, कापियां, पड़ी रहती थीं। ... और यूं धत कर के [हाथ के इशारे से] धकेल दी। धत, ये गाना है इतना लम्बा, कोई मीटर वीटर तुझे आता-वाता तो है नहीं। कल तू टाइम्स ऑफ़ इन्डिया ले के आयेगा और कहेगा इसकी भी धुन बना दो। ... पीछे बैठी हुई आशा जी ने इसी तरह, कुछ नहीं, बात क्या कर रहा था झाड़ रहा था मुझे, कि तुम कुछ सीखो इतने साल हो गए इंडस्ट्री में, आशा जी ने फ्रेज़ कोई गुनगुनाया तो नोट्स बड़े अच्छे लगे। तो उसने पूछा, बॉप, क्या गाया? कहने लगीं नहीं वो मुझे लौटा दो का फ्रेज़ इस तरह से बड़े अच्छे लगे।
और बस, कुछ ऐसी ही कहानी थी जिसका कुल जमा ये था कि वो पूरा गाना उन्होंने एक ही सिटिंग में पूरा बना दिया।
इसके बाद आया दिल हूम हूम करे, भूपेन हज़ारिका जी का संगीतबद्ध किया हुआ। इस गीत के विषय में एक बात जो गुलज़ार जी ने अपनी निजी राय कहकर बतायी, वो ये कि हालांकि ये गाना लता जी ने भी गाया है, उन्हें ये गीत भूपेन दा की आवाज़ में ज़्यादा पसन्द है।
अगला गीत था दिल से का शीर्षक गीत, दिल से रे।
यहाँ गुलज़ार साहब ने ए आर रहमान और मणिरत्नम के बारे में बात की। पहले मणिरत्नम के बारे में, ये कि मणि सर [गुलज़ार साहब को मणि कहना अधूरा लगता है] ने कहा कि आप मुझे abstract images दीजिये गाने में, जो उनसे पहले कभी किसी निर्देशक ने नहीं कहा था।
लेकिन गुलज़ार के अनुसार रहमान का एक बहुत बड़ा योगदान जो संगीत में, खासकर फिल्म संगीत में, है, वो ये है कि हमारे यहाँ मुखड़े और अंतरे की जो एक व्यवस्था हमेशा से चली आ रही है, जिस में दो लाइन का मुखड़ा, दो लाइन का अन्तरा और एक लिंकिंग लाइन या क्रॉस लाइन होती है, रहमान ने उसे तोड़ दिया है। वो शास्त्रीय संगीत की ही तरह गीत का विस्तार कर देते हैं और स्थायी यानि मुखड़े को कहीं भी वापस ले आते हैं, जिसने गीत को blank verse के, नज़्म के पास ला दिया है।
इसके बाद बहुत जल्दी से चुपके से लग जा गले की बात हुई, और फिर हम आये कजरारे पर।
गुलज़ार के अनुसार गीत के हिट होने में ऐश्वर्या राय का बहुत बड़ा हाथ है। लेकिन अगली बात थी जिस पर लोगों की तालियाँ काफी देर तक नहीं रुकीं। तो फिर एक बार गुलज़ार साहब के शब्दों में।
शंकर एहसान लॉय, एक तो ये टीम कमाल की है, इन में शंकर महादेवन जो एक शख़्स है, वो करवट ले तो मेलोडी निकलती है.. वो आदमी इस कदर मेलोडी से भरा हुआ मटका है कि आप किसी तरफ से उड़ेल लीजिये...
और आगे उनकी आवाज़ तालियों में कुछ दब गयी है।
गाना लिखा जाना था ढाबे के हिसाब से जहां ट्रक आते और इसीलिए गीत कुछ इसी तरह से था जैसे ट्रक के पीछे के शेर, जैसे कि 'बर्बाद हो रहे हैं जी तेरे अपने शहर वाले।'
अगला गीत था झूम बराबर झूम का शीर्षक गीत जो फिर से शंकर महादेवन ने गाया था। अब कार्यक्रम समापन की ओर था और हालांकि हम बेहद खुश थे, दिल में कहीं एक छोटा सा सवाल आ रहा था कि क्या ये गीत गुलज़ार के सर्वश्रेष्ठ में था।
खैर, भावना जी ने कहा कि अगला गीत अन्तिम था और ये लगभग निश्चित था कि ये जब तक है जान का होगा, लेकिन हम आशा कर रहे थे कि गीत शायद 'हीर' होगा, लेकिन वो था जिया जिया रे। गुलज़ार साहब का यही कहना था कि एक हसरत रह गयी कि यश जी इस फिल्म को चलते हुए देख नहीं पाए, और एक ये कि 'जाते जाते मुझे एक तोहफा दे गए यश जी, कि एक बार ज़िन्दगी में उनके साथ काम कर लिया, वरना मैं अधूरा रह जाता कहीं न कहीं।'
ये एक ऐसा इंटरव्यू था और एक ऐसा दिन था जो हो सकता है कि जीवन में एक ही बार आये, और इसलिए मेरी ख़ुशी का ठिकाना नहीं था। लेकिन फिर भी एक सवाल था जो आया और फिर गया नहीं।
सवाल ये था कि इतने गीतों की फेहरिस्त में वो कहां गया।
वो, जो पिछले कई सालों से गुलज़ार साहब के पीछे रहा, जिसकी हर फिल्म में गुलज़ार के शब्द थे, और जो खुद, पंचम के जाने के बाद गुलज़ार की आखिरी दो फिल्मों का संगीतकार रहा। वो जिसने इस दशक की गुलज़ार की सोलह फिल्मों में से पांच का संगीत दिया है और जिस को कभी कभी गुलज़ार मंच से भी 'मुझको जवान रखने के लिए' शुक्रिया कहते रहे हैं।
मुझे लगता नहीं कि गुलज़ार साहब की फिल्मों पर ध्यान देने वाला कोई व्यक्ति उस नाम को 'मिस' कर सकता है, और इसीलिए लगता है कि ये शायद किसी की नाराज़गी ही थी जिसने उसे इस कार्यक्रम से दूर रखा।
अब इस सवाल का जो भी जवाब हो, सवाल इतना बड़ा है कि शायद थोड़ा सा चुभता तो रहेगा। अभी तो चप्पा चप्पा पूछ रहा है कि क्यों छोड़ आये हम...

एक कहानी जो आगे भावना जी ने बताई वो ये कि मोरा गोरा रंग लई ले, मोहे श्याम रंग दई दे का आइडिया बार बार छुपते चाँद से आया था।
इंटरव्यू के दौरान भी गुलज़ार कितने सजग रहते हैं, ये इस से पता चलता है कि उन्होंने पहली कहानी के बाद ही राकेश ओमप्रकाश मेहरा और उनकी पत्नी भारती को, जो सामने अन्य दर्शकों के साथ बैठ कर इंटरव्यू देख रहे थे, धूप से हटकर छाँव में जाने को कहा क्योंकि उन्हें यह देखना अच्छा नहीं लग रहा था।
अगला गीत था आनन्द का 'मैंने तेरे लिए ही।' यहाँ गुलज़ार साहब ने बताया कि राजेश खन्ना इस फिल्म को करने के लिए कितने उत्सुक थे, अमिताभ का अभिनय फिल्म में कितना वास्तविक प्रतीत होने वाला, और किस प्रकार किशोर कुमार, जो आनन्द बनने वाले थे, के बार बार फिल्म को आगे खिसकाने और फिर एक दिन सिर मुंडवा लेने पर ये फिल्म राजेश खन्ना को मिली।
तीसरे गीत, आंधी का तेरे बिना ज़िन्दगी से, से भी कुछ कहानियाँ जुड़ी थीं। गुलज़ार कहते हैं कि उनके सामने एक नेत्री के लिए इंदिरा गाँधी से बेहतर कोई प्रतिमान नहीं था, लेकिन उनकी कहानी का इससे कोई रिश्ता नहीं था।
लेकिन इस से ज़्यादा छूने वाली कहानी थी उनके अभिनेताओं की। संजीव कुमार जो बिना ग्लिसरीन के, केवल अपने हाथ को आँखों पर रख कर आंसू ला सकते थे, और सुचित्रा सेन, जिनकी आँखें हर बार 'तुम जो कह दो तो आज की रात चाँद डूबेगा नहीं' सुन लेने ही से भर आती थीं।
जब ये याद आ जाता है तो जी भर आता है, उनका कहना था।
इसके बाद आया 'घर' से 'तेरे बिना जिया जाए ना', जिस के साथ रेखा जी की कहानी जुड़ी थी।
घर के निर्माता एन एन सिप्पी, और निर्देशक मानिक चटर्जी, जो उस समय अचानक अस्पताल में थे, के कहने पर गुलज़ार उनके लिए एक सेट पर निर्देशन करने गए थे। तब तक गुलज़ार ने रेखा के साथ कभी काम नहीं किया था लेकिन राखी जी के कारण रेखा उन्हें न सिर्फ जानती थीं बल्कि उनके पैर भी छूती थीं। फिर भी, पहले दिन जब रेखा सुबह की जगह दोपहर में सेट पर पहुँचीं, तो गुलज़ार ने उनसे कारण पूछा। कुछ झिझकने के बाद उन्होंने बताया कि उन्होंने गुलज़ार की फिल्म आंधी अब तक नहीं देखी थी और उन्हें लगा कि यदि उसके बारे में कोई बात हुई तो यह अच्छा नहीं लगेगा, और इसीलिए अभी वो आंधी देखने गयीं थीं।
अगला गीत था मासूम का लकड़ी की काठी। पहली कहानी शबाना आज़मी की जिन्होंने शेखर कपूर से कहा कि बच्चों का गाना गुलज़ार साहब को लिखना चाहिए। और दूसरी शेखर कपूर की जिन्होंने महसूस किया कि वो कुछ चुटकुले जोड़ कर खुद ही गीत बना सकते हैं। गुलज़ार ने पहले तो उन्हें कहा कि इस तरह नहीं हो पायेगा, लेकिन जब शेखर नहीं मानते दिखे तो गुलज़ार ने उन्हें पंचम के साथ काम शुरू करने को कहा। अगले दिन शेखर ने आकर गुलज़ार साहब को बताया कि शबाना जी ने उन्हें डांटा कि आप गुलज़ार साहब को उनका काम करने दें, बच्चों के लिए गाना लिखने वाले आप कौन होते हैं।
इसके बाद वो गीत जिस पर कार्यक्रम का नाम रखा गया था, मेरा कुछ सामान तुम्हारे पास पड़ा है।
आगे सीधे गुलज़ार के शब्दों में।
पंचम बैठे हुए थे, म्यूज़िक रूम में, और मैंने ये सुनाया पढ़ के। कहने लगा बहुत अच्छा सीन है यार। मैंने कहा सीन नहीं है गाना है। तो हारमोनियम के ऊपर वो चोपड़ियाँ, चोपड़ी कहता था वो, कापियां, पड़ी रहती थीं। ... और यूं धत कर के [हाथ के इशारे से] धकेल दी। धत, ये गाना है इतना लम्बा, कोई मीटर वीटर तुझे आता-वाता तो है नहीं। कल तू टाइम्स ऑफ़ इन्डिया ले के आयेगा और कहेगा इसकी भी धुन बना दो। ... पीछे बैठी हुई आशा जी ने इसी तरह, कुछ नहीं, बात क्या कर रहा था झाड़ रहा था मुझे, कि तुम कुछ सीखो इतने साल हो गए इंडस्ट्री में, आशा जी ने फ्रेज़ कोई गुनगुनाया तो नोट्स बड़े अच्छे लगे। तो उसने पूछा, बॉप, क्या गाया? कहने लगीं नहीं वो मुझे लौटा दो का फ्रेज़ इस तरह से बड़े अच्छे लगे।
और बस, कुछ ऐसी ही कहानी थी जिसका कुल जमा ये था कि वो पूरा गाना उन्होंने एक ही सिटिंग में पूरा बना दिया।
इसके बाद आया दिल हूम हूम करे, भूपेन हज़ारिका जी का संगीतबद्ध किया हुआ। इस गीत के विषय में एक बात जो गुलज़ार जी ने अपनी निजी राय कहकर बतायी, वो ये कि हालांकि ये गाना लता जी ने भी गाया है, उन्हें ये गीत भूपेन दा की आवाज़ में ज़्यादा पसन्द है।
अगला गीत था दिल से का शीर्षक गीत, दिल से रे।
यहाँ गुलज़ार साहब ने ए आर रहमान और मणिरत्नम के बारे में बात की। पहले मणिरत्नम के बारे में, ये कि मणि सर [गुलज़ार साहब को मणि कहना अधूरा लगता है] ने कहा कि आप मुझे abstract images दीजिये गाने में, जो उनसे पहले कभी किसी निर्देशक ने नहीं कहा था।
लेकिन गुलज़ार के अनुसार रहमान का एक बहुत बड़ा योगदान जो संगीत में, खासकर फिल्म संगीत में, है, वो ये है कि हमारे यहाँ मुखड़े और अंतरे की जो एक व्यवस्था हमेशा से चली आ रही है, जिस में दो लाइन का मुखड़ा, दो लाइन का अन्तरा और एक लिंकिंग लाइन या क्रॉस लाइन होती है, रहमान ने उसे तोड़ दिया है। वो शास्त्रीय संगीत की ही तरह गीत का विस्तार कर देते हैं और स्थायी यानि मुखड़े को कहीं भी वापस ले आते हैं, जिसने गीत को blank verse के, नज़्म के पास ला दिया है।
इसके बाद बहुत जल्दी से चुपके से लग जा गले की बात हुई, और फिर हम आये कजरारे पर।
गुलज़ार के अनुसार गीत के हिट होने में ऐश्वर्या राय का बहुत बड़ा हाथ है। लेकिन अगली बात थी जिस पर लोगों की तालियाँ काफी देर तक नहीं रुकीं। तो फिर एक बार गुलज़ार साहब के शब्दों में।
शंकर एहसान लॉय, एक तो ये टीम कमाल की है, इन में शंकर महादेवन जो एक शख़्स है, वो करवट ले तो मेलोडी निकलती है.. वो आदमी इस कदर मेलोडी से भरा हुआ मटका है कि आप किसी तरफ से उड़ेल लीजिये...
और आगे उनकी आवाज़ तालियों में कुछ दब गयी है।
गाना लिखा जाना था ढाबे के हिसाब से जहां ट्रक आते और इसीलिए गीत कुछ इसी तरह से था जैसे ट्रक के पीछे के शेर, जैसे कि 'बर्बाद हो रहे हैं जी तेरे अपने शहर वाले।'
अगला गीत था झूम बराबर झूम का शीर्षक गीत जो फिर से शंकर महादेवन ने गाया था। अब कार्यक्रम समापन की ओर था और हालांकि हम बेहद खुश थे, दिल में कहीं एक छोटा सा सवाल आ रहा था कि क्या ये गीत गुलज़ार के सर्वश्रेष्ठ में था।
खैर, भावना जी ने कहा कि अगला गीत अन्तिम था और ये लगभग निश्चित था कि ये जब तक है जान का होगा, लेकिन हम आशा कर रहे थे कि गीत शायद 'हीर' होगा, लेकिन वो था जिया जिया रे। गुलज़ार साहब का यही कहना था कि एक हसरत रह गयी कि यश जी इस फिल्म को चलते हुए देख नहीं पाए, और एक ये कि 'जाते जाते मुझे एक तोहफा दे गए यश जी, कि एक बार ज़िन्दगी में उनके साथ काम कर लिया, वरना मैं अधूरा रह जाता कहीं न कहीं।'
ये एक ऐसा इंटरव्यू था और एक ऐसा दिन था जो हो सकता है कि जीवन में एक ही बार आये, और इसलिए मेरी ख़ुशी का ठिकाना नहीं था। लेकिन फिर भी एक सवाल था जो आया और फिर गया नहीं।
सवाल ये था कि इतने गीतों की फेहरिस्त में वो कहां गया।
वो, जो पिछले कई सालों से गुलज़ार साहब के पीछे रहा, जिसकी हर फिल्म में गुलज़ार के शब्द थे, और जो खुद, पंचम के जाने के बाद गुलज़ार की आखिरी दो फिल्मों का संगीतकार रहा। वो जिसने इस दशक की गुलज़ार की सोलह फिल्मों में से पांच का संगीत दिया है और जिस को कभी कभी गुलज़ार मंच से भी 'मुझको जवान रखने के लिए' शुक्रिया कहते रहे हैं।
मुझे लगता नहीं कि गुलज़ार साहब की फिल्मों पर ध्यान देने वाला कोई व्यक्ति उस नाम को 'मिस' कर सकता है, और इसीलिए लगता है कि ये शायद किसी की नाराज़गी ही थी जिसने उसे इस कार्यक्रम से दूर रखा।
अब इस सवाल का जो भी जवाब हो, सवाल इतना बड़ा है कि शायद थोड़ा सा चुभता तो रहेगा। अभी तो चप्पा चप्पा पूछ रहा है कि क्यों छोड़ आये हम...

Tohe Piya Milenge Lyrics Translation (Raanjhnaa, Sukhwinder Singh)

Singer: Sukhwinder Singh, with KMMC Sufi Ensemble
Tohe Piya Milenge is one of the best tracks of Raanjhanaa, and no doubt one of Rahman's favorites, Sukhwinder Singh gets it. And though the song has some moving music and some beautiful and slightly non-traditional arrangements, it's the lyrics of the song that create the soul of the song here.
Irshad Kamil's lyrics here are romantic and spiritual at the same time, the kind where a beloved turns into something closer to God, and God Himself can be considered to be a beloved. Basically these lyrics are highly inspired by what is actually the base of Sufism. Do listen to the song without thinking whether the piya [beloved] here is a human or God Himself, and you'll enjoy it all the more.

Banarasiya is nothing but a person from Benares, or Banaras, or Varanasi, all different names for a place. It's a common way to call the natives of a place, like Mumbaiya. It's the same as New Yorkers, for example.
At the same time, Bana Rasiya could mean became a mad lover. So the word Banarasiya is used in two senses here, giving both the meanings. Such figure of speech with one word used for two meanings is known as Yamak Alankaar in Hindi/Sanskrit.

Tu Mun Shudi, the song is based on the first four lines taken from Amir Khusro's Sufi Kalaam, and were written in Persian. Other than the deep lines of the beginning, the lyrics of the entire songs are lovely, and especially the last para where the protagonist talks about a free world.
